Took bad advice from a friend who said 'just skip the tutorial'

My buddy who's been coding for a few years told me to just jump into building a project and figure it out as I go. I tried making a simple to-do list app and spent like 4 hours stuck on how to save data to a file. Turns out if I had just watched a 20 minute tutorial on file handling I would have saved myself all that time. Has anyone else had a friend give them advice that set them back instead of helping?

Jumping in here to say sometimes its not about the friend being wrong, its about how you learn. @miles798 I feel you on the version control thing though, that stuffs brutal to undo. Tutorials get a bad rep but theyre basically cheat codes for not wasting your night.

Yeah my buddy told me to skip version control. Spent a week fixing stuff I broke right after.
