Found out my favorite diner waters down their coffee, and I only learned it because of a napkin doodle
I eat breakfast at a place on 4th Street here in Columbus most Saturdays, and I always sit at the counter. Last month I watched the owner pour hot water straight from the tap into the urn before topping it off with the brewed stuff, and I just sat there with my mug halfway to my mouth. I asked him about it and he shrugged and said they have done it that way since 1987 because regulars complained the coffee was too strong back then. So for close to 40 years this diner has been serving what amounts to slightly brown water to people who genuinely love it. I did some quick math on a napkin and figured they stretch one pot into roughly two and a half pots, which saves them maybe 40 cents a day. I still go every Saturday because the eggs are cheap and the waitress remembers my order, but now I bring a thermos in my truck for after. Has anyone else caught a restaurant doing something like this, and did you say something or just quietly drink it?
So they've been disappointing people for almost 40 years and called it customer service, thats honestly impressive in a sad way. Saving 40 cents a day is wild too, like bro just raise the price a nickel and keep the coffee normal. I'd still eat there for the cheap eggs but that thermos move is the right call.
