I thought weighing beans was coffee snob nonsense until I tried it
For two years I just used the scoop that came with my grinder and eyeballed it. Then a barista at a shop in Portland asked what ratio I was using and I said I don't know, two scoops. She said try 60 grams per liter on a kitchen scale and see what happens. First pot with the scale, same beans, same grinder, tasted way more even and not sour at the end. Now I want to know if the cheap $12 scale I got is good enough or if I need to spend more.
Why do we all fight the simple stuff at first? I did the same thing with a food scale for baking, swore I could eyeball flour, then one day my cookies stopped coming out flat and I finally got it. It's like we think tools are cheating until we see the gap between guessing and actually knowing. A $12 scale is fine for coffee by the way, unless you're running a cafe you won't notice the difference. The real upgrade wasn't the scale, it was just paying attention, which honestly is half of everything in life lol.
