My coffee scale died right before a big pour over and I had to choose between a kitchen scale or a postage scale

I was about to make my morning V60, and my trusty little coffee scale just blinked out. I had two options: the big kitchen scale from the pantry (which only shows whole grams) or the tiny postage scale from my shop's office (which shows tenths of a gram). I went with the postage scale, thinking precision was key. I balanced my dripper on it, but the whole setup was so wobbly I nearly dumped 22 grams of expensive Ethiopian beans everywhere. It worked, but the pour was the most tense 3 minutes of my week. Has anyone else had to MacGyver a brewing setup with totally wrong gear?

My French press broke last week, so I've been straining coffee through a clean sock. It works, but I'm terrified of explaining the sock on the counter to guests. Your butter knife example is exactly the same kind of desperate fix.

That hyper-specialized gear is exactly what saves the routine though. My coffee scale has a timer built in, which is one less thing to mess with when I'm half awake. The right tool just makes the whole process smoother and more repeatable.
