My pour over went from fancy gadget to plain cone and I'm not going back

I used to have a $60 gooseneck kettle and one of those rotating drippers, the whole show. Then I moved to Portland last spring and my buddy just handed me a basic plastic V60 cone and said try it. Three months in, I realized the fancy stuff was masking bad pours, not fixing them. Now I use a $4 cone and a regular kettle, and my coffee tastes cleaner than it ever did. Has anyone else stripped their setup down to basics and seen better results?
