Ruined a $19 bag of Ethiopian beans because I didn't check my grinder burr after cleaning
Last Saturday I took apart my hand grinder to brush out the burrs, put it back together, and brewed a V60 with some Yirgacheffe I'd been saving. First sip tasted like paper and dust, and I almost blamed the beans. Turns out I'd seated the outer burr one notch off, so every particle was a different size and the bed choked at 2:45. Pulled it apart again, lined up the two dots on the ring, and the next cup was back to normal. Anyone else got a go to way to double check alignment before you waste a good bag?
So you spent 19 bucks to learn that your grinder has alignment dots, that is a rough way to start a Saturday. My trick is to mark the ring with a sharpie before I take it apart, so there is no guessing when it goes back together. Cheap insurance for expensive beans.
