That talk with the barista at Third Wave Cafe hit different

I was grabbing a pour-over at Third Wave Cafe on 12th street yesterday and the barista named Marta told me she stopped using expensive single-origin beans for her home setup. She said she blends $8 bag beans from the grocery store with a cheap dark roast and gets better flavor than most $20 bags. It made me rethink my whole snobby approach to buying beans. Anyone else try blending cheap stuff and get good results?

Yeah, I was a total bean snob too but you might be onto something here.

Happened to see my buddy Dave grabbing a bag of store brand pinto beans at the grocery store last month. This is a guy who used to drive 45 minutes to a specialty shop just for heirloom varieties. I gave him so much crap about it. He just shrugged and said he did a blind taste test at home with some friends and honestly couldn't tell the difference between the fancy ones and the basic ones in chili. Made me rethink my whole bean-buying philosophy.
