TIL my $22 kitchen scale has been lying to me and my coffee ratio math is ruined
About 8 months ago I got tired of guessing my beans by the scoop so I grabbed a cheap digital scale from the grocery store for $22. Been weighing out 18 grams every morning like clockwork, feeling real smug about my consistency. Then my roommate brought home a little calibration weight from his work bench and my scale read it 2.3 grams heavy. Every single cup I have brewed since March has been off by that much, which means my 1:16 ratio has really been like 1:14.3 and I have just been drinking stronger coffee this whole time thinking I had good technique. I recalibrated it and today's cup tasted watery and sad, which is honestly hilarious. Tossed it and now I am back to square one on my morning pour over. So do I buy a real scale or just lean into the heavy scoop life? What are you all using that does not need a calibration weight from a guy's garage?
