A damp box of comics shifted my take on collecting

I used to laugh at friends who bagged every comic. Then I found my old issues in a damp box, and many were stuck together or torn. Now I see that careful collecting saves stories for the future. How do you balance reading comics with keeping them in good shape?

My copy of The Dark Knight Returns #1 sat in a garage for ten years. When I finally opened the box, the cover was glued to the next book by damp paper. I felt sick seeing it ruined. Now I bag every single issue after one read. I even bought a dehumidifier for my storage room. It's the only way to make sure they last.

Lost my X-Men #94 to humidity. Now everything's bagged and boarded.

That's a tough way to learn the lesson, for sure. Sometimes the fear of damage can turn the hobby into more about storage than enjoyment. Finding a middle ground lets you actually appreciate the books you own.
