I used to roll my eyes at people who bought variant covers

For years I thought variant covers were just a cash grab for collectors who cared more about plastic than story. Then I picked up a blank sketch cover at a con in Austin last spring and got a local artist to do a custom drawing on it. Now I get it - it's not about the resale value, it's about having something that feels personal and one-of-a-kind. Has anyone else had that switch flip where a gimmick suddenly made sense?

Those blank sketch covers ARE actually a different thing from ordinary variant covers though.
