I walked into a shop in Portland and saw a wall of comics priced by condition, not by story
I always figured grading was mostly a way for sellers to bump up prices, so I stayed away from slabbed books for a long time. Last month I killed an afternoon at a shop on SE Hawthorne in Portland and the owner had two copies of the same issue side by side, one beat up for $8 and one graded for $140. He let me flip through both and the difference was not the story at all, it was the paper, the staples, the spine, stuff I never really looked at. I sat there for maybe 20 minutes just comparing the two and I finally got why people care about this stuff. The story is the same either way, but the object itself is a whole separate thing you can actually collect. So now I am wondering, do you buy to read or buy to keep? And does anyone else feel weird about cracking open a graded book just to read it again?
