Rant: A guy at the Chicago Comic Con line tried to gatekeep my friend's newbie questions
We were waiting for a panel and my friend asked a simple question about a character's backstory. This guy in front of us turned around and gave a ten minute lecture on why she wasn't a 'real fan' for not knowing. It made the whole vibe feel bad and unwelcoming. Do you think this kind of gatekeeping is getting worse at cons?

My buddy got the same treatment for wearing a band shirt he got as a gift. Some guy quizzed him on album release dates like it was a test. That stuff just makes people not want to join in, which hurts the whole community.

Saw a panel at a smaller con last year where a speaker called out gatekeeping as the biggest threat to fandom. They said turning new fans away just shrinks the community for everyone. That guy's lecture is exactly the kind of thing they were talking about, it just makes the whole scene look bad.
