Debate: is hot water diving really safer or just a comfort thing?

I used to think hot water suits were just for divers who couldn't handle a little cold. Then I did a 4 hour deep dive off Port Fourchon last December and my hands went numb after 90 minutes. My buddy had a hot water setup and he was fine the whole time, working faster and clearer. Now I'm wondering if I was wrong about them being a luxury - has anyone else switched sides on this or am I just getting soft?
