Used to swear by surface-supplied air for everything, but a tight job changed my view.

I always thought the umbilical and comms were non-negotiable for any real work. Got into a real confined intake structure last month where the hose was a constant snag hazard, and scuba was just more practical. Anyone else run into situations where the 'standard' setup wasn't the right call?

Your 'scuba was more practical' take misses the hose's safety benefits in tight spots.

Okay, @joel_patel60, you mentioned the hose's safety benefits in tight spots. Can you give an example where that really matters, like in cave diving or something? I'm trying to see how it beats scuba gear in practice, because in open water, scuba seems way less hassle lmao. What kind of tight spots are you thinking of, and how does the hose help more than a regular tank? Just curious if this is from personal experience or what.

Read about cave divers using them.
