Warning: My old way of checking my bailout bottle almost cost me

I was on a job in the Gulf last month, and my tender asked me to show him my bottle pressure before the dive. I gave him the usual thumbs up, but he made me pull it out and read the gauge myself. It was at 800 psi, not the 3000 I thought it was from my quick glance that morning. How often do you guys physically check your own bailout pressure instead of just trusting a visual from your tender?

Forget checking it yourself, you gotta treat your tender like a second set of eyes that can also be wrong. My rule is we both put a hand on the gauge and say the number out loud together before the dive. That way there's zero chance of a quick glance mistake from either side. It turns a solo check into a confirmed fact. Saved my butt more than once when my brain was already thinking about the job. That shared moment forces you both to actually see the real number.

That shared moment is a total game changer for safety.
