Watched a guy in Port Arthur skip his pre-dive valve check on a 180 ft job, and I need to vent about why that scares me

Yikes, that is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night. I have totally blanked on stuff before a dive too, but there is a big difference between forgetting your dive light in the truck and skipping a valve check on a 180 foot job. At that depth you are one stuck valve away from a really bad day, and no fish or wreck is worth that.
