A client in Dallas had a power surge fry three machines at once
Now I always carry a basic surge protector in my kit to test outlets before plugging anything in. What else do you guys keep on hand for unexpected site issues?

Yeah, testing outlets first is smart. I read a forum post once where a guy swore by carrying a cheap voltage tester too, not just a surge protector. He said it saved him from a miswired outlet that was putting out wrong voltage. Now I keep one of those little pen testers in my bag. It's a quick check for bad wiring before anything gets plugged in.

Ever had a pen tester show a hot ground? Mine lit up once in an old building and I just packed up. That little beep saved my gear from a real sketchy outlet.

Good on you @shaneh13 for catching that, those little testers are absolute lifesavers.
