Can we talk about the shop in Reno that charges $65 just to look at a laptop
Stopped in a repair shop off Virginia Street last month while visiting my sister. Owner had 6 dead laptops stacked behind the counter and told me he charges $65 upfront just for the look. No fix, no refund, just the look. I get it, time is money, but he was running a 3 week backlog and turning away walk-ins at the door. Meanwhile I do free 10 minute checks at my bench and book more work off it. Is the upfront fee model actually working for anyone here, or does it just scare off the same day crowd?
The "3 week backlog and turning away walk-ins" part is what gets me. If you're that backed up, why charge the $65 at all? That fee is supposed to filter out tire kickers, but it sounds like he's got more work than he can handle either way. So what is the $65 actually buying him, besides a stack of dead laptops nobody came back for?
