Found out the thermal paste on that Dell from 2011 was still soft, and I felt silly for redoing it
Pulled a dusty Optiplex 790 out of a client's closet in Reno last week, thing had been running 24/7 since they bought it. I told them the paste was probably dust by now, so I popped the cooler and it was still tacky and gray. Checked the CPU temp after a fresh coat and it only dropped 4 degrees, so I basically did it for nothing. Anyone else stop replacing paste on old office towers unless the temps actually tell you to?
Ever see a friend buy thermal paste for a machine that didn't need it? Mine did that on an old HP, temps were fine, and he was out ten bucks and an hour for nothing.
