Old timer told me to always check the CMOS battery first

Had a customer bring in a Dell Optiplex that wouldn't boot. Got random beep codes and the clock was resetting every time. Spent an hour swapping RAM and testing the PSU. Then I remembered what a guy at a shop in Austin told me 5 years ago: start with the CMOS battery. Swapped in a new CR2032 for 3 bucks and it fired right up. Anyone else wasted time on complicated fixes when it was just a dead battery?

That CR2032 has saved my back more times than I can count. Had a similar issue with a HP ProDesk last month where the clock would drift by hours every week. Tore the whole machine apart before I just popped in a new battery on a whim. How many of those "dead" boards have you seen tossed because someone didn't check that little silver disc first?
