Pushing back on 'always image the drive first' after a hospital job in Boise

At St. Luke's last month I skipped the clone for a quick SMART check on a suspicious Seagate, and the SMART was clean but the drive died mid-copy anyway. In my experience, the old guard's rule about imaging first is solid for home users, but in a busy hospital environment you balance that against patient chart downtime, so I now run both a hardware self-test and a quick read test before deciding. Anyone else find that blanket imaging advice falls flat when the customer is a nurse waiting on radiology files?
