Talked to a retired IT guy about thermal paste and he made me question everything

An old timer came in for a repair last Tuesday and watched me reapply thermal paste on a Dell. He said I was using too much, told me to use a single rice grain size, no spreading. I've been doing the pea method for years, but he pulled out a 20 year old CPU and showed me the difference. Now I'm wondering if I've been causing overheating issues all along. Anyone else get schooled by someone older in the field and change their whole routine?
