That IT guy who said to just reinstall Windows saved my hide

Last month I had a client's POS system locking up every 20 minutes at their coffee shop in Portland. I spent three days swapping RAM, checking drives, updating drivers, the whole circus. Then this older IT contractor who was there fixing their router said, 'Quit messing with it and just nuke the OS.' I thought he was lazy, but I was desperate, so I did a clean install and rebuilt their software stack. It ran 14 straight hours the next day without a single hiccup. Turns out there was some corrupted system file that no scan ever caught. I've been in this trade for about 6 years and I still reach for hardware first too often. Anybody else have a moment where the dumb simple advice beat all your fancy diagnostics?
