Why does everyone push SSDs for old machines without checking the motherboard first

I was working on a 2012 Dell Optiplex for a client last month in Austin. Kept getting random freezes after I swapped in a new SATA SSD. Turns out the SATA controller on that board has a known bug with certain drives. Spent 4 hours troubleshooting before I found a forum post about it. Had to flash a custom BIOS just to get it stable. Now I always check the chipset before recommending any drive swap. Has anyone else run into controller compatibility issues like this?

Man that's rough, @rayc89. I had a buddy throw a Samsung 860 EVO into his old HP Pavilion from like 2010 and it would just randomly drop the connection. He tried different cables, different ports, nothing worked until he found out the JMicron controller on that board hates Samsung drives specifically. He ended up using a cheap Kingston drive instead and it ran fine for years. Weird how picky some of those old chipsets are, even with standard SATA stuff.

God that's such a pain, I feel for you spending all that time on it. I've definitely been burned by stupid chipset quirks, it's crazy how picky some older boards are.
