Working on a laptop at a library in Tacoma made me rethink my diagnostic order

I was trying to fix a boot loop for a patron, and the first thing I did was open the case. The noise and dust made them so nervous, I realized I should always check the simple stuff, like power settings and external drives, in public view first. Anyone else adjust their process when you're not in your own shop?

That library story is so real. I see it with my dad now, he gets worried if I even look at the back of the TV for too long. People just need to see you try the simple button presses first.

Yeah, that line about "people need to see you try the simple button presses first" really hits home. I used to just dive right into the deep end with the command line or hardware. But watching someone's face go from panic to relief when you just unplug a USB drive or restart the router, it's a lesson. Now I always do the visible, simple checks in front of them, even if I'm sure it's something harder.

My favorite part is when they swear they already tried that, but it magically works when you do it.
