Old timer at the supply house changed my whole finish technique

He watched me troweling a slab for ten minutes, then just said "you're working the cream too long, stop chasing the shine." Two passes less and the surface came out glass-smooth. Anyone else had a random guy give you a tip that cut your labor time in half?

Honestly used to think old timer tricks were overrated but that brush flick thing is genius.

Did a similar thing happen to me with a painter? This old guy came by while I was cutting in around some windows, just watched for a minute and goes "you're using too much paint on your brush, that's why it's dripping." He showed me this little flick-of-the-wrist thing to get the excess off. Completely changed how fast I could work, no more wiping drips off the glass every five minutes. It's funny how the simplest stuff can be the thing nobody tells you, you just have to learn it from somebody who's been doing it forever. I mean, I spent years just dealing with the drips like it was normal.

Had the same thing with drywall mud, old timer showed me how to hold the knife at the right angle and it stopped all the gouges.
