Bleach burn disaster at 10am on a Saturday
I was doing a full foil highlight on a regular client last weekend at my chair in Salon Lofts near Columbus. Halfway through the processing I noticed the foil near her scalp felt way hotter than normal and she started complaining about stinging. I pulled the foils off fast and rinsed for a solid 10 minutes with cool water. Has anyone else dealt with bleach overheating on fine hair and what do you use to prevent it now?

Was the bleach you used formulated for fine hair or did you just mix your normal go-to? I've had that exact thing happen with 20 volume on someone with baby-fine texture and it felt like the foils were cooking. Since then I started adding a protein booster to the lightener on fine hair AND I space my sections wider so there's more scalp exposure to keep things cooler. Did you check the actual developer level too?

My 5th client ever with fine hair taught me this lesson hard, that was back in 2021 at my booth in Cleveland. You mentioned adding protein booster but on fine hair that can actually make things WORSE sometimes because it speeds up the chemical reaction and creates more heat. I actually switched to a bond builder instead of protein and it helped a ton with keeping the heat down. Something else that really made a difference for me was using 10 volume instead of 20 on anyone with super fine texture. That way you get lift without the extra heat spike.
