Talked to a client who's been coming to my chair for 20 years

She mentioned how her first perm with me back in 2004 took almost three hours, and now her color and tone is done in under an hour. It made me realize how much the tools and products have sped everything up, but I kinda miss the long, chatty sessions. Anyone else feel like the pace has changed the client relationship a bit?

That efficiency gain is real, but it definitely trades some of the personal connection for speed.

Started blocking out a little extra time for my regulars, just ten or fifteen minutes, after the main service. Honestly, it lets us have that coffee and catch-up without rushing the next client. Tbh it costs me a slot sometimes, but keeping that connection feels worth it.

Hold up, that sounds like a fast track to burnout. You're basically giving away your time for free, and that adds up to a whole lost appointment every day. Those catch-ups are nice, but they train clients to expect free extras, and then you're working more for the same money. Gotta set clear boundaries or your schedule will never be your own.
