Unpopular opinion: A client said my $75 balayage looked 'too perfect' and it made me rethink my whole style.

She told me she wanted something more 'lived-in' and less salon-fresh, which honestly threw me off. Do you guys ever get that feedback, and how do you balance technical perfection with a more natural look?

My last haircut cost $22 at Supercuts and I still found a way to mess up the back. So the idea of hair being "too perfect" is wild to me. I get what @davidcooper is saying about dialing it back on purpose. Maybe it's like when you over-edit a photo and it looks fake. Leaving a few brighter pieces or a harder line where the color starts could make it look less like a doll. Like it actually grew out of someone's head.

Oh man, the "too perfect" comment hits home! I had a client say almost the exact same thing about a color melt last year. It's a weird feeling when you nail the technique and then have to dial it back on purpose. I started leaving a few more "baby lights" around the face and not blending the root smudge so much, and that did the trick. It's a tough balance for sure.
