PSA: That Netflix top 10 badge is not what you think it is
I looked it up after my wife asked why every new movie has one, and it turns out the list is just hours watched, not unique viewers, so a 90 minute movie gets counted once per person but a 6 hour show racks up 4 times the numbers. So that "#1 in the US" tag basically just means people left it on while folding laundry, has anyone else noticed this or did I ruin movie night for no reason?
My husband pointed out the exact same thing last month and I felt so dumb for not catching it sooner. We had a six hour baking show at the top of our list for weeks and I kept thinking wow, everyone must love this, but nope, it was just people leaving it running while they did dishes. The 90 minute movie thing really gets me too. A two hour film has to work twice as hard as a show that people just let play in the background. Now I squint at that badge every time and just assume someone fell asleep on the couch.
