Had to choose between hitting a parked car or a dumpster full of scrap.

Picked the dumpster last Tuesday on a tight jobsite in Oakland. Scrap metal everywhere but my boom stayed straight and nobody got hurt. Anyone else ever pick the lesser of two bad options like that?

Dumpster was the right call every time. Hitting a parked car means dealing with insurance, bodywork, and a pissed off owner who might come out swinging. Scrap metal is just cleanup. That said, you gotta watch what's inside those dumpsters. I hit one once that had old fluorescent tubes in it. Broke some and had mercury dust everywhere. That was a whole hazmat situation I didn't sign up for. But yeah, between denting a car and cleaning up metal scraps, the dumpster is the lesser evil nine times out of ten. Just peek inside first if you can.

Did the mercury dust cause any health issues for you after that, or did you manage to get out of there before it got bad?
