Just picked the wrong crane for a job in Phoenix last week...

Had to choose between a 50-ton lattice crawler and a 90-ton hydraulic truck crane for setting HVAC units on a 6-story building. I went with the crawler thinking it would be steadier on the gravel lot... but the ground was way softer than I expected. Got stuck twice trying to move between pads and lost almost 3 hours with the ground crew bringing in mats. Has anyone else had a similar situation where the stable option turned out to be a headache?

The 90 ton wouldn't sink any less on soft ground.

The thing about "stable" options is theyre only stable on paper until reality hits. That gravel lot probably looked solid but it just hid how soft it was underneath. Its like buying a heavy duty truck but never checking if your driveway can hold it. Ive noticed this pattern everywhere not just in construction. People pick the beefier tool or the thicker material thinking its safer but they forget the environment matters just as much as the equipment. That 90 ton truck crane probably would have saved you even if it felt less stable at first cause it could move faster and not sink.
