My old foreman in Gary told me to stop greasing my swing bearing before checking play, and I blew $800 finding out he was right
About 6 months back I was running a 60 ton at a job site near the mills in Gary, and my swing bearing felt loose so I kept pumping grease into it thinking I was protecting it. My old foreman pulled me aside and said I was hiding the slop and to check the play dry first before adding anything, quote "you're just filling up the gap and lying to yourself." I ignored him for a month, the swing got sloppy and jerky, and the mobile tech charged me $800 to pull the bearing and show me the wear I had been masking with all that grease. So now I pull the play dry with a dial indicator, write the number in the cab log every Monday, then grease. Does anyone else check play dry first, or do you just pump and pray like I was doing?
