That old timer who corrected my hand signals back in 2004 still sticks with me
I was running a Grove RT530 down in Baton Rouge on a warehouse job. Young guy, thought I had it all figured out. This old cat named Leroy was my rigger, must have been pushing 70. I gave the boom up signal with my fist closed the way I learned it, and he just stopped everything, walked up to the cab, and said 'son, that's how you tell me to pick the load, not raise the boom. You trying to drop something on my head?' I felt like an idiot. Turns out there's this whole difference between hand signals taught at the school and what the older guys actually run on site. He spent the rest of the week showing me the local variations, stuff that never made it into any book. Ever run into a rigger or operator who had a completely different signal language than what you learned?
