Unpopular opinion: That mandatory safety refresher we did last month was a waste of time
I heard a couple guys in the break room saying the crane safety seminar from OSHA was super helpful. Ngl, I sat through the whole thing and it was just common sense stuff we already know, like checking load charts and not swinging over people. I've been running a Liebherr LTM 1050 for 12 years now and I've never had an incident because I follow the basic rules. Why are we spending 3 hours on stuff we learn in week one of trade school instead of on real site issues like tight spots or bad ground conditions?

Oh boy, here we go again with the safety meetings. Look, I get it feels like a waste when you've been doing this forever. But heres the thing nobody talks about - those refreshers arent for you. Theyre for the new guy who thinks he knows it all or the foreman who cuts corners when the boss isnt looking. I saw a guy drop a load last year because he skipped a basic check, and guess what, the safety meeting the month before had just covered that exact step. So yeah, it sucks sitting through it, but it covers the company's butt and might save someones day without them even knowing it.

Two summers back, a crane operator on 42nd Street missed a daily safety check and sheared a hydrant, flooding the block for hours.
