My writing group begged me to outline everything and my short story went from 4 pages of garbage to 11 pages I actually like
Two paths sat in front of me for my short story about a guy who fixes old radios in his basement: keep writing with zero plan like I always do, or actually outline the thing first. I fought the outline people for a long time because it felt like homework and killed the fun of finding out where a story goes. But my draft had stalled at page 4 for three straight weeks, just me opening the file, reading the same four pages, and closing it again. So I cracked and wrote a beat sheet on a legal pad while riding the bus home from my job in Evanston, one line per scene, twelve lines total. Then I sat down and the draft came out to 11 messy pages in two nights, and yeah some of it is bad, the dialogue especially, but the story has a middle now. Here's the thing nobody told me: the outline isn't a cage, it's a map, and I still went off it twice when a better idea showed up. So what do you all do, outline first or just dump words and fix it later, and has anyone else had an outline actually save a draft that was dead in the water?
