Showerthought: Wrote my first draft in crayon at a laundromat and it came out better than anything I typed
I've been messing with a short story about my grandfather's garage for about 3 weeks now and every draft I typed on my laptop came out stiff and fake. Then Thursday night I was stuck at the Suds N Duds on 9th waiting on a dryer and I had nothing but a notebook and one of those fat crayons my kid left in the truck. I wrote the whole opening scene longhand in like 40 minutes and when I read it back the next day it actually sounded like a person talking. I think typing makes me edit while I write, and the crayon was so dumb and slow that I just let the sentences be bad and kept going. Now I'm on my 4th pass of that same opening and I'm barely changing anything, which has never happened to me before. So my question is has anyone else noticed that switching tools changes what comes out, or am I just making excuses to buy more notebooks?
