The six word comment that fixed my entire opening chapter
I posted a messy first draft of my novel's first chapter here about a month ago, and someone just said "you start five pages too early." At first I was annoyed, but then I looked back and yeah, the real story didn't kick in until page six. I cut those five pages and suddenly the whole pacing felt tighter and the tension showed up way sooner. It made me wonder how many other drafts I've padded with setup that readers just skip anyway. Has anyone else gotten a tiny comment that forced a huge rewrite like that?
Doubting that cutting five pages is some huge life lesson honestly. Sometimes those early pages do real work, like setting up a character's voice or a place, and readers who bail after two pages were never gonna stick around anyway. I've seen books where the slow start was the point and the payoff hit harder because of it. Sounds like your draft just had a weak front, not that every opening needs to be all action from line one.
