Tried writing my rough drafts by hand in a $2 notebook and now I can't go back to typing them
I had a short story stuck for 3 weeks, just staring at a blinking cursor. So I grabbed a cheap spiral notebook from a drugstore in Tulsa and wrote the messy version longhand, cross-outs and all. The words came out way faster and I stopped editing myself every sentence. Now I'm torn, because typing is quicker but my best raw stuff comes out with a pen. Does handwriting help anyone else get past the blank page, or is it just a waste of time?
Longhand is my go-to for the messy first pass too, mostly because there's no backspace key to babysit. What works for me is writing the rough draft by hand, then typing it up later, which doubles as a first edit since I catch stuff as I go. Your mileage may vary, but that combo keeps the speed of typing without losing the loose feel you get from a pen.
