Appreciation post: the $15 'vintage lamp' in Omaha was just a rusty pipe with a bulb taped on
Everyone in this group always goes nuts for the 'hidden gem' listings, like a $40 mid century chair that just needs a little love. In my view, that is the wrong way to read the weird ones, because the fake treasure posts are usually boring and staged. Last Tuesday I drove 25 minutes to Papillion to look at a 'rare antique lamp' listed for $15, and it turned out to be a 6 inch piece of rusty pipe with a broken bulb taped to the top. The seller looked me dead in the eye and claimed it was 'steampunk art' and that I just did not get it. I still gave him the $15 because I was laughing so hard, and now the pipe sits on my workbench as a reminder. What is the worst 'hidden gem' you actually paid money for?
