I finally get why people use writing prompts after 2 months of ignoring them
I kept seeing prompt threads on here and figured they were for people who couldn't think of their own ideas. Then last Tuesday I sat down to write a short scene and stared at a blank page for 45 minutes. Out of spite I grabbed a random prompt about a vending machine that only gives out keys. I wrote 700 words in an hour, which is triple my usual pace. The weird part is the prompt didn't give me a plot, it just gave me a door to walk through. Now I use them as a warmup before any real writing session. Does anyone else treat prompts as a starting line rather than a full roadmap?
