I started writing a story about a normal day, then changed one detail
I wrote a scene about a guy making coffee in his kitchen. It was boring. Then I changed it so the coffee machine was a gift from his ex-wife, who he still thinks about. That one detail changed the whole feeling of the scene in about ten minutes of editing. It made the character's quiet morning feel sad instead of just routine. Has anyone else had a small change like that completely flip a scene?

that part about the mug becoming his favorite after the brother died is exactly what I'm talking about. it's wild how one small detail like that can flip a scene on its head. did you write the scene knowing the brother was dead from the start, or did you realize it halfway through and go back to add the mug?

That old blue mug in my story became his dead brother's favorite.

That line about the mug becoming his favorite feels off to me. Objects don't get meaning until after the person is gone, margaret99. The memory is what makes it special, not the other way around.
