My character outline fell apart at sentence 12, then I tried the opposite

Last night I was writing a prompt about a detective who loses his memory, and by the third paragraph the whole thing felt fake. I scrapped it and wrote the same scene but with the detective remembering everything perfectly, only everyone around him acts like he's confused. That tiny flip made the whole thing click, and I finished the prompt in 20 minutes. Has anyone else had luck just reversing one core detail when a story stalls out?
