My neighbor said my characters all sound the same, then read me one line from each story and proved it in 5 minutes

She pointed out I use the same sarcastic tone for every narrator and after I rewrote one dialogue scene to match a quieter voice the whole story clicked, has anyone else had someone outside writing spot a pattern you missed?

Disagree a little bit here. I think having a consistent narrative voice across your stories is actually a strength, not a flaw. It's your signature style and readers who like it will come back for more. Changing it to fit different characters or tones might just confuse your audience. The issue you had was probably more about that one story not matching your natural voice, not about your voice being wrong overall.

Hmm, I guess I see it the other way. If every story has the same voice, doesn't that just make it feel like the same book over and over? I've noticed with some authors who have a really strong signature style, after a few books it starts to feel predictable and I lose interest. Like, the tension or surprise kind of fades when you already know exactly how the narrator is going to describe everything. Maybe that one story not matching your voice was actually a good experiment, and if you'd leaned into it more, it could have opened up something new.
