My old writing teacher in Dayton told me to cut every adverb and I fought her for a year
Back in 2019 she marked up a 12 page short story of mine with so much red that whole sentences vanished, and I told her she was gutting my voice. Two drafts later the thing sold to a tiny lit mag for $25 and readers quoted lines I'd almost deleted. Now I hand out the same advice to my own workshop group, so what's a rule you got that felt like a personal attack until it worked?
