My writing group argued over a prompt about a character finding a key in a coffee shop.

Half said it should unlock a literal door, the other half wanted it to be a metaphor for a memory. I went with the memory idea and wrote a story set in my hometown of Boise. Did I make the right call?

Literal doors are way more fun to write.

How could a key not be about a memory?

I used to agree with kellyr18, but a good memory metaphor can hit way harder than any physical door.
