PSA: stop using the weather as character development in every draft

I read three entries in this week's critique thread where a storm rolled in exactly when the protagonist hit their low point, and it took me back to my own first draft from 2019 that did the same thing. Then a beta reader asked me why the rain mattered to the plot and I couldn't answer, which made me realize it was just a lazy shortcut for mood. Does anyone else flag this pattern now, or do you still let a sudden downpour do the emotional heavy lifting?
