Got skimmed at a gas station in Denver and now I want to know what else I should be doing
So about 3 weeks ago I stopped at a pump off I-25 in Denver on my way home from a work trip. Paid with my debit card like I always do, nothing felt weird about it. 6 days later my bank calls me about two charges for $480 and $212 at stores I have never set foot in. Turned out someone put a skimmer right over the card reader slot and it looked totally normal. My bank gave the money back but it took 9 days and I had to file a police report, which was a whole thing. Since then I have been paying at the counter inside and using my credit card instead of debit, but I feel like that is the bare minimum. What else do you all do to protect your card at the pump, and is there any way to spot a skimmer before you swipe? Need real tips, not the obvious stuff.
Man that really sucks, getting skimmed is such a gut punch especially when you did nothing wrong. The pull test is the one trick that actually works for me, grab the card reader and give it a firm tug because real ones don't budge and skimmers usually pop right off. Also wiggle the keypad cover and check for a weird loose feel, since those overlay pieces are the giveaway.
