Used the same password for 10 years until my email got hacked

I was sitting in my living room last Tuesday around 9pm watching some YouTube when my phone started blowing up with login alerts from my email provider. Someone in Russia was trying to get into my account and they actually succeeded because my password was just my dog's name with a 1 at the end. I had to spend the whole night resetting passwords for my bank, PayPal, and like 15 other sites. What finally convinced me to change my habits was realizing that I had used that same password for everything since college. Now I use a password manager and every single account has a totally random string of characters. It's a pain to set up but honestly way less stressful than getting locked out of your email at midnight. Anybody else wait until something bad happens before changing their passwords?
