Vent: dropped $260 on a password manager bundle for my parents and my stepdad still writes them in a birthday card
I finally talked my mom and stepdad into letting me fix their logins after their bank account got hit for $1,100 back in March. I bought them a family plan password manager plus a physical security key, ran about $260 total with the key and the yearly sub, drove out to their place in Mesa and set up every account myself on a Saturday. My stepdad nodded the whole time, asked good questions, seemed into it. Two weeks later I'm over for dinner and there's a birthday card on the counter with his email password written inside it, in pen, sitting next to the mail for anyone walking by to read. I lost it a little bit. He said the app is annoying and the card is faster, and honestly I don't know how to argue with that without sounding like a jerk. I keep wondering if I wasted the money or if I just did the setup wrong. Has anyone gotten an older parent to actually stick with a manager, or do I need to pick a different fight?
The birthday card part got me. He wrote it IN the card. Like the one thing you're supposed to keep and look back on, and now it's also his email password sitting out for the mailman to see. That's a whole new level of stubborn. My mom did something close with hers until I set it so the app fills it in with one tap, and the "extra step" turned into less work than finding the card. Maybe that's the angle: make it faster than the card, not safer. Right now the card wins on speed and that's the only scoreboard he cares about.
